Cycling stars raise thousands

CHARITIES on the Isle of Wight have benefited from a bicycle bonanza, with £34,000 raised thanks to last year’s Isle of Wight Cycling Festival.

The news was announced today (Wednesday) by the Isle of Wight Council, which said the cash would be split between 14 organisations.

They include Help for Heroes, the Earl Mountbatten Hospice, the British Heart Foundation, the Woodland Trust, Wessex Heartbeat, Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, Ventnor and District Local History Society and Sail 4 Cancer.

The money was raised from events during the festival, including £18,000 alone from the Wightlink Wight Challenge.

A further £9,500 was raised by Cycle the Wight and more than £1,000 was collected during the West Wight Triathlon.

The 2014 Isle of Wight Cycling Festival is due to take place between September13 and 28.
