ALMOST all the Isle of Wight’s bathing beaches have received the top rating in the latest Marine Conservation Society Good Beach Guide.

The guide rates beaches on their water quality, from recommended to failing.

Out of the Island’s 14 rated beaches, 12 received the recommended rating, while Bembridge met mandatory standards and Shanklin met guideline standards.

Last year nine beaches met the recommended standard.

Bembridge was the only beach to fall in standards this year, slipping from guideline to mandatory. Shanklin improved from mandatory to guideline, Ryde improved from mandatory to recommended and Gurnard and St

Helens both improved from guideline to recommended.

There was a national increase in how many beaches achieved the highest standard and MCS Coastal pollution officer Rachel Wyatt said: "It’s great news that we are able to recommend more beaches than ever for excellent water quality and it shows just how good British beaches can be.

"The main challenge now is maintaining these standards, whatever the weather."
Isle of Wight Council Executive member responsible for tourism Shirley Smart said: "This news is very timely ahead of the main tourism season and is a welcome boost."
